Dissertation title: Categorial Distinctness or a Continuum of Phenomena? An Investigation into the Relationship between Emotions, Moods and Atmospheres
Abstract: While moods and emotions have often been considered belonging to the same domain of human affectivity, though varying in the degree of focus in their specific intentionality, the discussion of atmospheres mostly has been part of aesthetic discourses. Nevertheless - atmospheres are far from being unrelated to the affective phenomena mentioned before. Hermann Schmitz analyses most affective phenomena as effects of atmospheres touching the individual's lived body and Max Scheler notes mood-like, "atmospheric" entities, that can be found, e. g., inherent in landscapes. These approaches clearly suggest a conception of atmosphere that relates atmospheres to the domain of human affectivity.
