Dissertation title: Relief and Motivational Orientation: Avoidance Goals and Approach Behavior.
    Abstract:
Together with Dr. Roland Deutsch and Prof. Fritz Strack, I work on motivational effects of relief of negative affect in humans. It is known that negative affect is associated with avoidance (e.g., Lang, 1995, see Case 1). Theories of human motivation predict that the absence of negative events (e.g., losses) are associated with a loss-focused motivational orientation (e.g., Prevention Focus in Regulatory Focus Theory, Higgins, 1997; see Case 2), whereas animal learning theories predict and empirically found stronger approach orientation for stimuli conditioned to the absence of negative affect (safety or relief signals, e.g., Rescorla & Solomon, 1967; see Case 3).
